DIY Wooden Bead Decor for Christmas

Note from Ashley: This ornament project by our contributor Jessica Rebelo is such a fun and different idea for the holidays. I think they're so pretty that they can be used year-round. It would also be easy to customize them as a gift for someone on your list. If you make some, be sure to share the results with us!

I can’t believe Christmas is around the corner, just the perfect time to start thinking about some home decoration. For this year I want to keep things simple and get away from the red, white and green, why not use any other colours? For a while I wanted to make a project using wooden beads and this was a good opportunity for it, they are affordable, look great and are versatile.

Lansing Art Gallery's Holiday Art Market

I just sent off eight different styles of cards to be apart of Lansing Art Gallery's Holiday Art Market - this is one of the most exciting things I've ever done with my cards. I think it means a lot to me because this is a local thing - I'm in East Lansing, the next city over.

If you are in Michigan, I really hope you can come to Lansing and visit the Holiday Art Market November 16th - December 22nd, Tuesday - Thursday 10 AM - 4 PM; Friday 10 AM - 5 PM; Saturdays 1 PM - 4 PM. Friday, November 16th is Silver Bells in the City, Lansing's holiday event with a light parade and the lighting of the official state tree. The Holiday Art Market will be open from 5 PM - 9 PM on this night.

When I wrote my last post, I was out of town - expecting to be home on Tuesday, but Hurricane Sandy affected our travels. I am so behind on pretty much everything, so I've had to close my Etsy shop for a week. That is so hard for me to do - I rarely ever do it, but I know if I want to sleep during the next week, it had to be done.

The Best Sugar Cookies and Butter Cream Frosting Recipe. Ever.

This is the sugar cookie recipe our friends and family always ask for. This is my Grandma's Sugar Cookies and Butter Cream Frosting recipe. I crave these cookies all year long - and why not have sugar cookies for every holiday?

People love the sugar cookies that come out of this recipe because they are light, fluffy, and soft. If you do not want soft and fluffy cookies, then this is not the recipe for you. The butter cream frosting is the perfect consistency for spreading. I have yet to find another sugar cookie that tops this recipe, so please, enjoy!

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter – softened
  • ¼ c. milk
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 cups flour
DIRECTIONS

Mix butter and sugar. I use a fork to mash the two together until evenly mixed.

Add eggs and vanilla, followed by milk, stirring well.

Add dry ingredients - we usually use a little less than 4 cups of flour, because when you are rolling out the dough you use flour which adds to the dough. If there is too much flour it can make them very dry.

Stir until smooth. Refrigerate dough for at least 1 hour before rolling and cutting cookies. For fluffier cookies, refrigerate dough overnight.*

Remove dough from refrigerator, and roll out onto floured surface. Remember not to roll the dough out too thin unless you like them thin and crispy.

Bake at 350 degrees for 8-11 minutes depending on your oven and what you are cooking them on.

Let cool before frosting.

*While the dough is setting in the fridge, you can make the frosting. If refrigerating overnight, make the frosting right before you're reading to roll, cut, and bake the dough; however, you can make it ahead of time and store in an air-tight container in the fridge a day or two in advance. Simply remove it from the fridge about an hour or two before using it, so that it is not too stiff to spread on the cookies.

Butter Cream Frosting
  • 1 stick unsalted butter softened
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • Up to 4 tablespoons of milk – start with 2 and go from there
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar- continue to add until the right consistency for frosting, up to 2 cups*
*So, you've noticed that I did not put an amount for the powdered sugar? This is because the amount of powdered sugar you will use depends entirely on the desired consistency of the frosting.

Mix together your softened butter, salt, 2 tablespoons of milk, and vanilla.

Start with 1/2 cup of powdered sugar, and stir in. In 1/4 cup increments, add more powdered sugar and stir, until it's as thick or thin as you like. I recommend somewhere between 1.5 - 2 cups of powdered sugar, total.

If you find that you have added too much sugar and it's too stiff, then add another tablespoon of milk, up to four tablespoons total.

When you are happy with the consistency, separate your frosting into however many colors of frosting you will be using. Once separated, add in you food coloring.

After frosting cookies, leave them in the open air so the frosting can harden just a bit.

We also separate each layer of cookies with waxed paper so they don’t stick together, and add a slice of bread inside of the container, which keeps the cookies moist while the bread dries out.

These cookies also freeze and thaw really well - we've made them up to a month in advance of eating them and kept them fresh by freezing. They'll also store well in an air-tight container for over a week - if you don't eat them all first :)

DOUGH INGREDIENTS
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter – softened
  • ¼ c. milk
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar

COOKIE DIRECTIONS
Mix butter and sugar - use a fork to mash the two together until evenly mixed. Add eggs and vanilla, followed by milk, stirring well. Add dry ingredients (tip: we use a little less than 4 cups of flour, because when rolling out the dough you use flour which adds to the dough. This allows for a moister cookie).

Stir until smooth. Refrigerate dough for at least 1 hour before rolling and cutting cookies. For fluffier cookies, refrigerate dough overnight.

Remove dough from refrigerator, and roll out onto floured surface. If you want thick and fluffy cookies, roll the dough to about 1/4" to 1/3"; if you want crispier cookies, roll it thinner. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-11 minutes depending on your oven and what you are cooking them on.  Let cool before frosting.

Family Keepsake Ornament DIY

You may have seen this post by me on GHTR - this is a re-post of my original guest post.

This project is nice for your own family, or as a handmade gift for another. Inside the glass bulb are the names of each member of the family - pets included - written or printed on little paper banners. Use a banner to mark the year as well, so you'll never forget.

Materials
1 clear glass bulb ornament with hook
as many paper banners as needed, in complimentary colors
a fine-tipped pen

Directions
Measure the opening of the bulb to make sure paper banners will fit inside without crumpling. Cut out as many paper banners as needed for each name. I also included one banner to mark the year, and another banner I left blank for decoration.

Gently fold the banner in half and lightly pinch the crease - just enough so that that banner stays shut, but not so much that it is permanently creased shut.

Re-open the banner and write the name of a family member. Repeat for each family member. Write the holiday and year on one banner if you desire, and leave another blank. I included one glittering bronze banner to leave blank.

Gently, partially fold the banners again, and drop inside the ornament. Once all paper banners are inside, replace the cap of the ornament.

Shake gently to release banners from each other's folds if needed, and package in a protective box for gift-giving.

Simple DIY Evergreen Glass Ornaments

This is one of the easiest sets of ornaments you'll ever make. They're earthy, seasonal, rustic, simple, and inexpensive.

Start by collecting a few evergreen bunches from whichever local type you have. Don't choose a type with overly-long needles, such as the White Pine - you may have trouble fitting them in the bulb.

Take the top off your bulb, and gently insert 1-3 little branches, bottom first so as not to bend the needles. Replace the cap of the bulb.

These should look fresh for a month or two. They will likely dry out and yellow before next year, so each year you'll have to pull out the branches with tweezers and replace.

I'm envisioning a dozen or so of these, hanging across the wide entrance to our dining room with a natural twine.

2012 update: as I predicted last year, the evergreens did dry up in the bulbs, but it wasn't a problem at all to pull them out and replace.
